Heart To Heart
This service is not intended to provide an in-depth evaluation of a specific serial number. Even on the simplest aircraft, the variables are so numerous and complex that prices can vary even between consecutive serial numbers of the same model. An on-site inspection of the aircraft and its records by a qualified appraiser can reveal very different values. Additionally, the aircraft resale market is a dynamic environment and prices can change from month to month. There are many intangibles to consider. This includes the availability of a particular model, damage history (or lack thereof), maintenance history and types of repairs and upgrades. The aircraft appraisal service can be used as a good starting point when trying to determine the overall value of an aircraft at retail. However, the actual value of an aircraft can only be determined on a case-by-case basis as a result of mutual agreement between the buyer, seller and lender. Optionally, VREF provides additional services that allow pilots to obtain a more accurate rating and verified VREF value. More information on upgrading to the optional advanced VREF service can be found in the VREF application.
Users of the flight assessment service agree to hold VREF harmless from any liability in any way related to the use of the service. Click the button below to launch the free VREF Valuation App.

Do you need a loan to buy a plane? Look no further! Finance can offer what you need. Aircraft valuation is a tool that provides some comfort to all parties involved in the aircraft business. How detailed an assessment do you need? There are three assessment levels; each more detailed than the last, each costing slightly more as the level of analysis increases.
Mix It Up
There are three types - price comparison versions such as those offered by AOPA members through Vref, desktop and on-site or physical evaluations. Let's look at the difference.
A Vref or Bluebook analysis is good for 90 percent of people's needs. Poof! You will find that the majority of business can be done with just a Vref rating. A disadvantage of valuation is that the data is inherently a bit old - at least a quarter of a year old. Also, the true value of upgrades such as avionics or STCs can be difficult to determine and may not be as accurate as more expensive estimates.
Also, a valuation chart doesn't properly include fluid things like current supply and demand. If an aircraft is produced in limited quantities (short supply) and demand fluctuates, the value may be higher or lower than the digested price might indicate. In such cases, it is generally better to spend the money on desk food.
A desk appraisal is done by a certified appraiser. What makes a certified appraiser different from a simple appraisal is looking at market data including what's on the market. The appraiser will also assess where the market has been trending as well as the average day in the market and use that to know where it is going. The appraiser will evaluate an individual aircraft, such as one with a JetPROP engine upgrade for a Piper Malibu, to see where it is in its maintenance schedule compared to other similar aircraft for sale, this gives a more accurate estimate of value.
Training And Safety Tip: Altitude Adjustment
This is especially true for turboprops and light aircraft. Are aircraft maintenance costs coming up? Is he enrolled in an engine maintenance course? A certified appraiser will look at the entire market, do a cursory check of the aircraft's books and specifications, but will not physically inspect the aircraft. The cost of a desk evaluation is usually $500 or $600.
A physical assessment is that invasive - almost like a pre-purchase inspection. It's worth its weight in gold. The planner will enter the aircraft, open the hatch, carefully inspect all engines and maintenance records, and thoroughly inspect the aircraft. This type of evaluation is recommended for truly unique aircraft such as the aforementioned JetPROP upgrade or modified Blackhawk aircraft. and on most jet aircraft it is a requirement. The downside to an on-site or physical assessment is its cost—typically $2,000 to $3,000 or more.
