There is a dedicated children's library and resources for students and prospective students. You can bring your own device to connect to the library's wifi.

There are not many towns nearby. The closest is Barstow. Another option is Hesperia. Los Angeles is 2.5 hours away, and while it's among the largest metropolitan areas known to humans, the drive is likely to be quite circuitous.

Barstow is a small town with a population of about 23,000 people. It was first established in 1830. At the time it was a major hub for transportation and settlers in the Mojave Desert, and today it still serves as a junction for several highways and railroads. The city is home to a vibrant cultural scene, several museums, a performing arts center, Barstow Mall and more. New construction is planned in the near future to provide an economic stimulus. Fort Irwin is by far the largest employer.

Hesperia is a larger town further away from the post office. The journey by car would take about an hour and a half. About 95,000 inhabitants live here. The city has a long history dating back to 1781. Boxing legend Jack Dempsey was among the developers in the 1950s who began attracting visitors and residents to the area through a variety of new properties and amenities. There is decent economic activity here, with employers representing education, civil government, retail and the food service sector.

Newberry Springs is one of the few unincorporated communities in the Mojave Desert near the base. It is located in a desert oasis with mineral springs among the many natural features you will find. It has historically been the source of water for the area and continues to support local farms and ranches to this day. There are several options for outdoor entertainment in the area, and ESPN has hosted ski tournaments here.

Jermo is a town east of Barstow. The population here is less than 2000 people. It is a small community with a ghost town nearby and access to the Calico Mountains.

Daggett is another unincorporated community close to publication. It is also east of Barstow. In 2000, the population was only 200 people. Daggett has a history of industry in the area and became the site of large solar installations before they were shut down.

Silver Valley Unified School District serves children of parents who live and work in Fort Irwin. The district includes 7 schools and serves children in grades K-12. The Mojave Desert is extremely dry year-round. Summers are very unpleasant and the temperature can rise up to 100 degrees. Winter is much more bearable and even pleasant in comparison, as the cold stays in the low 30s and there isn't much precipitation to speak of. There are several interesting museums and other cultural sites nearby, as well as plenty of natural resources to explore. From caves to wildlife preserves, the outdoor enthusiast will be a happy camper after PCSing at Fort Irwin.
